Welcome To A Dry Heat – A Phoenix Suns Blog

placeholder

I was there.

March 20, 1989. I was among the 12,315 in the crowd of Phoenix’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum that day to see the Suns top the Miami Heat 115-97.  A nascent NBA fan, I now had a favourite team to root for (no, not the Heat – although that would have worked out better in the long run).

I was there.

The 1990 Western Conference Semifinals.  The Suns bounce the powerhouse (and arch nemesis) Lakers out of the playoffs in five games.  Bright days were ahead.  Right?

I was there.

The 1992 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.  Cedric Ceballos, pulls off some hocus pocus and wins the contest, as predicted by his biggest fan – me.

I was there.

June 17, 1992. The Suns rob the Sixers for all-time great Charles Barkley.  While the trade immediately makes Phoenix a title contender, it breaks my mother’s heart.  Despite his risque nickname, Jeff Hornacek had a far more palatable personality for mothers than Sir Charles did.

I was there.

June 20, 1993.  The Bulls beat the Suns in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, taking home another title.  John Paxson hits a dagger three to win it.  20+ years later, I have yet to watch a replay of that shot.

I was there.

The 1996 NBA Draft.  The Suns draft fellow Canadian (and fellow 1974 baby) Steve Nash.  More on him in bit.

I wasn’t there.

During the Stephon Marbury years.  But can you blame a guy?!

I was there.

The Steve Nash Years (Part II).  While never getting over the hump, the Suns are a perennial title contender and the most exciting team in the League.

I was there.

2013. Jeff Hornacek comes back to the fold as “Coach Jeff Hornacek” and the Suns are once again the runningest-guningest-funingest(?!) team in the land.

And now I’m here.

A Dry Heat – a Phoenix Suns blog.

Go Suns Go.
