They say you can’t know the future if you don’t know the past.  Or something.  And who exactly “they” are I can’t tell you.  But I needed an intro to this feature, and that’s the best I’m going to do.

With the 2015 edition of the NBA Draft fast approaching, let’s take a look back at the Phoenix Suns draft history (lottery era only).  Maybe it’ll give us some insight into what they might do in this year’s draft.  But probably not.  Whatever.

Phoenix Suns 1990 NBA Draft Haul

First Round:

Jayson Williams (#21)

Jayson Williams turned out to be a solid selection, especially late in the first round.  Unfortunately it took him time to develop into an All-Star, and then he suffered a career-ending injury.  Plus he never did suit up for the Suns, as they traded him for a future 1st round pick, which they then paired up with Eddie Johnson in a trade for Xavier McDaniel.  Follow all that?!

Could have had: Antonio Davis (45), Cedric Ceballos (48)

Rest of Draft:

Negele Knight (2, 31)
Cedric Ceballos (2, 48)
Milos Babic (2, 50)

Could have had: Antonio Davis (45), Tony Smith (51)

In the second round the Suns got a serviceable backup (sometime starting) point guard in Negele Knight, and a future All-Star in Cedric Ceballos.  A very nice haul.

Overall Suns Draft Grade: A

(drafted two future All-Stars at picks 21 & 48 – not too shabby)
