Another Phoenix Suns season has come to a close, prematurely once more.  Time to debrief and recap how all 14 players currently on the team’s roster fared during the 2014/15 season.  This is The Good, the Bad and the Ugly on Markieff Morris

2014/15 Phoenix Stats: 82 games, 31.5 mpg, 15.3 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.2 spg, 0.5 bpg, 2.1 topg, 3.0 PF/game, 46.5% FG, 31.8 % 3Pts, 76.3% FT

(bolded stats indicate team leader)

Contract Status: $8,000,000 for 15/16, $7,400,000 in 16/17, $8,000,000 in 17/18, $8,600,000 in 18/19

The Good

– played in all 82 games
– 19th in the NBA in field goals made
– posted career highs in most stats
– can score inside and out
– capable of big scoring nights – topped 30 points on three occasions
– got on a real consistent hot streak near the end of the season
– can stretch defenses and knock down the 3
– above average at getting steals
among best in the league at taking charges
– still only 25 – just entering his prime

The Bad

– can be a knucklehead, on and off the court
– 15 technical fouls on the season – 2nd most in the NBA
– 5th most personal fouls in the league
– decent rebounder, but subpar for a post player
– not the greatest defender
– upside probably is limited – not going to be a superstar

The Ugly

– arrested for felony aggravated assault
– called out Suns fans during the season

Conclusion

I’ve got mixed feelings about Markieff Morris.  While he provides a versatile scoring option for the team, he’s not the greatest defender and rates high on the knucklehead scale.  He’s never going to be the level of player that you can build a championship contender around, but could be a decent third option on a championship team.  His best value for the Suns might be as a trade chip, with his decent long term contract, age, and skill level making it easy to deal him
